BHAF History
The Black Hills Advertising Federation was founded in 1981 by the late Tom Franklin.
The original club consisted of 80 members representing advertising professionals
from throughout the Black Hills community. The purpose of the club was to meet other
creative professionals, network with industries that service the ad industry and
to provide creative stimulus to its members.
Throughout our history, the club has strived to bring the very best of advertising
practices to the Black Hills area. Local and nationally recognized speakers present
not only to our club, but share their expertise to the community through educational
seminars.
Early in the history of the club, the decision was made to assist non-profit organizations
in the community through our Public Service Campaign. Each year our club asks non-profits
to apply for this campaign. Our club has completed successful campaigns for; Court
Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Youth and Family Services, Working Against Violence
Inc. (WAVI), the Center for Restorative Justice, Black Hills Regional Food Bank,
Foster Care Alliance, Black Hills Children’s Home and Behavior Management Systems,
just to name a few.
The Black Hills Advertising Federation is a part of District 8 of the American Advertising
Federation (AAF). Originally, the Black Hills Advertising Federation joined with
the Sioux Falls Advertising Club to host the annual ADDY awards-a competition for
local and national advertisers to showcase their work. In 2006, the club began hosting
their own Black Hills Advertising Awards, showcasing the very best of advertising
in western South Dakota along with recognizing the Silver Medal Award winner. It
has been the pleasure of the Black Hills Advertising Federation to add the “Tommy”
Award in honor of our founder, Tom Franklin. The Tommy Award recognizes the best
of the best in each category for their outstanding achievement and creative excellence.
